THE GACHAPARTMENT COMPLEX for
LIGHT TO NIGHT 2024 (SAW 2024)
For Singapore Art Week 2024, the National Gallery of Singapore (NGS) invited me to play around with the underground walkway that connects the City Hall MRT station to Funan. Centered around a town of toys that live in repurposed gachapon machines, the 4 metre-tall and 90 metre-long mural depicts their a day in their joyous, bizarre and sorrowful lives — for even in another dimension, some things never change, after all.
Along with the mural, animated videos of the toys trundling along in gachapon-ball cars (on what I call the Gachabahn) were projected on several screens along the walkway. I also had the privilege of working with students from Temasek Polytechnic's School of Design to create site-specific Instagram AR filters on certain portions of the wall for visitors to muck around with.
