CAMPAIGN WEBSITE & PUBLICATION

THE SPECTRUM OF PLAY

The Spectrum of Play is a conceptual social campaign that is centred around the issue of gender-typing in children’s toys: for example, how dolls are almost exclusively marketed to little girls, and cars and dinosaurs to little boys.

In a world where gender is increasingly understood as a spectrum, imposing arbitrary gender boundaries on children stratifies development along gender lines, forcing children into boxes and perpetuating outdated stereotypes.

PART 1

Designed to aid a parent, family member or educator, I created a website to take users through an understanding of gender-typing in toys and its history, as well as how it manifests in negative social pressures on children.

PART 2

Spectrum is a family magazine that contains informative essays for parents as well as fun activities for children, aiming to cultivate the awareness of gender-typing in toys, and promoting a more gender-inclusive culture of play and parenting, so that we can work towards a world that children can freely explore without being tied down to societal expectations.
